Regenerative Medicine Is Getting Attention — Right Along Side of MSK Ultrasound Guided Injections

Needle Guidance

Regenerative Medicine Is Getting Attention

You may be hearing more about regenerative medicine for joint, tendon, and other musculoskeletal problems. Treatments such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) are being studied and used for selected orthopedic conditions.

But there’s an important part of these treatments that doesn’t always get as much attention:

Where is the injection actually going?

When a treatment is intended for a particular joint, tendon, tendon sheath, bursa, or other small structure, accurate placement matters.

See the Target. Guide the Needle.

With musculoskeletal ultrasound, we can visualize the anatomy in real time while guiding the needle.

Instead of relying on surface landmarks alone, ultrasound allows us to watch the needle as it advances toward the intended target. It can also help identify nearby nerves, blood vessels, and other structures that should be avoided.

Think of it this way: If the treatment is meant for a specific location, you want to know the medication is being delivered where it is intended to go.

That’s one of the important advantages of ultrasound guidance.

Before He Ever Picks Up the Probe

With Michael Jablon's expertise, his approach begins before the ultrasound examination.

Using the Jablon Protocol, he listens carefully to the patient’s symptoms, takes a focused history, and performs a physical and positional examination to help determine where the problem may be coming from.

MSK ultrasound can provide another piece of the picture—allowing him to examine the area dynamically and, when an ultrasound-guided procedure is appropriate, precisely guide the needle toward the intended target.

The Treatment Matters. So Does the Target.

Regenerative medicine continues to evolve, right along with the valuable assistance of needle guidance.

When an injection is recommended, whether it’s cortisone, lidocaine, PRP, or another regenerative treatment, ultrasound guidance offers something very valuable:

The ability to see where you’re going.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is safe, noninvasive, and uses no radiation. For guided procedures, it provides real-time visualization throughout needle placement.

Precision Matters

When an injection is intended to help a specific injury or painful area, getting the treatment to the right place matters.  Ultrasound guidance allows the physician to see the targeted tissue and guide the injection in real time -- without radiation.

If you're considering a regenerative medicine procedure for a musculoskeletal problem, ask whether ultrasound guidance may be appropriate for you.
